This is a one day course with an end of day exam. The course cost includes your RYA VHF handbook. Candidates who successfully complete the course and exam will receive, from the RYA, the Short Range Certificate of Competence, allowing them to operate VHF/DSC marine radio equipment.

RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate (SRC) Classroom Course

During this course you will be taught current best practice in communications using VHF/DSC radios. You will be allocated your own training radio for the duration of the course. The training session is followed by a second shorter session which includes a short written test  and  the opportunity to demonstrate your new knowledge and skills to an independent RYA examiner. Successful completion of the course will qualify you to receive the Short Range Certificate of Competence (issued by RYA) authorising the holder to operate  VHF/DSC marine radio equipment.

  • Minimum age: 16 years, and in line with our Safeguarding Policy young adults under 18 should be accompanied by a responsible adult
  • Venue: Fox’s Marina & Boatyard, The Strand, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP2 8SA
  • Prior knowledge: Home study of the G31 course book supplied by Ashore Sailing
  • Course duration: One day including exam
  • Award: Short Range Certificate of Competence
  • Course cost: £95.00
  • RYA exam & certificate fee: £76.00 (Payable to the RYA)
